The majority of children we feed during the school year depend on school for at least one nutritious meal each day. Just because these young scholars don’t have classes for two months during summer break, doesn’t mean we stop feeding them.
Our award-winning summer feeding program provided 126,468 free meals to kids and families in our neighborhoods this summer. That’s a nearly 40% increase from the same time period two years ago!
Throughout the summer, we partnered with FRESHFARM Markets, plus camps and community programs, like the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy and their YBA PLAY clinics, to distribute 88,855 healthy, delicious, free meals to kids and their families. We sent our Mobile Meals trucks out on the streets to deliver meals in neighborhoods and opened cafeterias at 15 DCCK-supported DCPS schools, where we served over 37,613 hot, ready-to-eat meals over the break.
We’d like to give a special thanks to partners, like Aldi and Safeway, whose generous support allowed us to serve more than 3,000 schoolchildren and their families this summer.
With school back in session, our Healthy School Food team members are excited to be back behind the lunch counters at the 30 schools across DC for another engaging year of nutritious, scratch-cooked meals and learning!
