DC Central Kitchen welcomes volunteers 365 days a year. The 19,000 diverse individuals who devote their time and talent to our work come to us for a variety of reasons. But most everyone leaves with a memorable story and new sense of human connection. While their chopping, dicing, and slicing help us serve 17,000 meals to our neighbors each day, our volunteers are part of the positive ‘ripple effect’ they set off in our city each time a knife hits the cutting board. By working in solidarity alongside our culinary students and graduates—many of whom have known hunger and hardship themselves—volunteers leave with a new feeling of shared purpose after a few hours in our (bright and welcoming!) kitchen.
Below are some of the latest testimonials from dedicated volunteers about how their time with us resonated long after they took off their aprons. Interested in sharing in these good vibes? Sign up for a shift today as we ramp up for an intense summer of fighting hunger in DC and you can find out for yourself!

“Seva is a Sanskrit word meaning selfless service. Our mission is straightforward: connecting and mobilizing volunteers with the organizations and communities that need us most.
Volunteering at DC Central Kitchen brought that mission into sharp focus. The work itself is hands-on and grounding. We are chopping, packing, and preparing, but what we feel in that space is something larger. Seeing this organization deliver nourishing meals at real scale, day after day, is both humbling and inspiring.
As an educator for thirty years, I know in my bones how much a good meal matters. Not frozen, not canned — real nutrition that fuels a child’s ability to learn, to focus, to simply show up ready for the day. What struck me at DC Central Kitchen was the care and precision behind every single box. Nothing haphazard. Nothing halfhearted. Each meal packed with genuine intention for families navigating genuinely hard times.
But the moment that stayed with me most wasn’t a meal. It was a conversation.
I spoke with a member of the kitchen team who had come up through DC Central Kitchen’s culinary training program. He shared his story openly and warmly: there was a time, he said, when opportunities were scarce and he had made some mistakes when he was young. DC Central Kitchen gave him a chance to start over. Now he’s working, contributing, carrying himself with unmistakable pride. He was warm, enthusiastic, and generous with his story in the way that only someone truly at peace with their path can be.
That’s what this work is really about. Not just meals. Dignity. Second chances. People choosing to rebuild and communities choosing to help them do it.
For us at SevaRise, every volunteer experience is about showing up with that same intention and supporting partners who do this work every single day, and contributing in a way that feels genuine and real. It’s the same spirit we bring to everything we do together.
There is real joy in showing up. In doing the work. In serving with love.”

“Volunteering at DC Central Kitchen is incredibly easy and impactful. I was initially worried about the time and effort it would take to coordinate an event for 10-20 volunteers, but DCCK made the process wonderfully accessible. With a single call, I reserved a date and number of volunteer positions. DCCK quickly confirmed the details of my event via email and provided me with all the necessary information to pass along to my coworkers including registration instructions, dress code, directions, and everything else a volunteer needs to know ahead of time. With DCCK’s help facilitating the event, I was able to focus on organizing my team of volunteers.
As a volunteer, the experience is genuinely engaging, exciting, and rewarding. The Klein Center is a living testament to the impressive work performed by DCCK, with its celebrated history and achievements displayed on the walls. I was personally amazed by the success of DCCK’s job training and placement programs, and it’s truly uplifting to volunteer with the students in the kitchen. Every moment spent volunteering feels valuable and purposeful; a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to make a real difference in the community.”
