Your support helped us serve a record number of meals in 2025 as hunger and unemployment spiked in DC. Today, we’re asking you to help with the daunting task of serving healthy meals across the city in the face of a major blizzard.
While families, businesses, schools, and our most underserved neighbors are bracing for a potentially historic snowstorm, so is DC Central Kitchen. Since our first day on January 20, 1989, we’ve never closed. If we don’t work, our hungry neighbors don’t eat, so we have remained open in the face of snowstorms, natural disasters, shutdowns, and other disruptions—all thanks to you!
- We’re preparing and delivering more than 1,400 additional meals that can be delivered in advance and kept on-site at our Community Meal program partners, including shelters and recovery programs.
- We’re rushing additional bulk food orders and filling our trucks with gas to ensure our kitchen and fleet can operate without interruption.
- To keep cooking through the crisis, we’re housing 21 front-line staff in a nearby hotel so they can reach our kitchen facility and safely continue meal preparation and packaging.
- We’ll ensure food insecure children enrolled in out-of-school time and childcare programs that remain open while schools are closed are able to eat healthy meals right in their own communities.
Earlier this week, we celebrated 37 years of service to the city we love. No matter how much snow drops down on DC this weekend, we’ll be open, always open, because of you!
