I’ve been blessed. In my life, I’ve run and owned restaurants. I married a tremendous life partner and became a dad to three amazing kids who are now equally amazing adults. And for 20 years, I’ve had the honor of leading DC Central Kitchen.
There have been times when I didn’t have the answers. When the choices in front of me seemed impossible. When I wasn’t sure I was up to the challenge.
But here’s the truth, a truth DC Central Kitchen reminds me of every day. When we keep moving, keep believing, and stay true to the people around us, those uncertain moments eventually give way to brighter days. I often say that I’m the luckiest man in the world because I have the best job in the world, I get to speak about the people that make up DC Central Kitchen. There are more than 300 people in the DC Central Kitchen family that do hard and meaningful work. They’re at one of our kitchens, out on the roads, in front of the stove, behind the wheel, working to raise money, out in the community, doing events at one of the schools, feeding our children, every single day. More than half of our colleagues at DC Central Kitchen are graduates from our Culinary Job Training program and now work with us and do incredibly powerful work in our community.
Because of you, DC Central Kitchen has been open every day, without fail, for over 13,000 consecutive days. That’s 35 years of relentless struggle against hunger, poverty, and hopelessness. A struggle through which we’ve made a real difference, serving 51 million meals to our neighbors and empowering 2,300 people to trade unemployment for new careers through our Culinary Job Training program.
That’s what DC Central Kitchen is all about, to make our shared city a better place, to give everyone the opportunity to be the person they want to be.
