DCCK Mourns Passing of Transformational Supporter

Please join DC Central Kitchen in honoring the life and legacy of Robert E. Torray, who passed away on May 10. A successful businessman and devoted philanthropist, Bob and his wife Nancy discovered DC Central Kitchen as volunteers two decades ago. In 2006, when we were in jeopardy of not making payroll for the first time in our history, Bob literally answered our call and provided the bridge funding we needed to right our cashflow and secure our first major social enterprise contract. Moved by our progress, Bob and Nancy made the largest donation DC Central Kitchen had ever received, encouraging us to “plan for the future, not for payroll.” Their generosity made it possible for us to invest in living wages and comprehensive staff benefits while confronting the Great Recession head-on with creative new solutions, like our Healthy School Food program. Thanks to their transformative generosity and the expert stewardship of the Torray Fund, DCCK has strived to remain focused on the future, no matter the challenges of the day. We will forever remember Bob’s energy, vision, and compassion and take solace in our memories of his genuine kindness and unparalleled impact on our mission. Read his full obituary.
